James R. Smalley

James R. Smalley was born in Fresno County in 1926 to James and Anna Smalley. Jim was raised in Merced. He died on Feb. 7, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in Modesto.

Jim joined the United States Marines at the age of 17 and served in the First Division, 5th Battalion in World War II. His unit fought on Peleliu and Okinawa and he finished his service in China.

Jim retired from CAL FIRE as a Ranger I Battalion Chief after 32 years. He was stationed mostly in Mariposa, except for five years at Los Gatos Conservation Camp, where he was the assistant camp supervisor.

Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary; three daughters, Rhonda O’Bannon (Pat), Jennifer Keyser (Kenny) and Gayle Siebenberg (Bob). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Jim enjoyed his family, woodworking and hanging out with his Bootjack friends.

There will be no services at Jim’s request.
