Small quake is felt in county

(Image: Wikipedia)(Image: Wikipedia)An earthquake was felt in the county on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 7:58 p.m.

The quake, centered in the southern part of the county, registered 2.5 magnitude, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It struck at a depth of 8.6 miles, about 10 miles south of Mariposa.

Shallow quakes, in the 0 to 40 mile depth range, can feel much stronger than they actually are. Quakes that are right below the earth’s surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause a lot of damage even at lower magnitudes.

GAZETTE Correspondent Carol Reiter felt the quake. She initially thought something, perhaps a dog, had bumped into the house where she lives off Old Highway.
