Aaron Alva Thompson

Aaron Alva Thompson, son of Howard and Lorraine Thompson, passed away with his family by his side on Jan. 28 after a short battle with cancer. He was 61.

Aaron is survived by his long-time companion Jill Ratzlaff of Merced, son Philip Thompson of Sheridan Wyo., grandson Joshua Thompson of Delta, Utah, granddaughter Allysen Baxter, granddaughter Mellani Baxter, grandson Clayton Baxter, all of Le Grand, stepdaughter Denise Addison of Clear Lake, granddaughter Raeyana Knight of Clear Lake, stepson Scott Knight of Ceres, granddaughter Jyllian Knight of Turlock, brother Andy Thompson of Mariposa, sister Nancy Fairchild of Coarsegold, sister Betty Jenkins of Belt, Mont., sister Louise Jones of Midpines and brother Jerry Thompson of Hartsel, Colo.

Aaron was preceded in death by daughter Angel Baxter of Le Grand and sister Sharron Law of El Portal.

Aaron was born on March 8, 1953 in Merced. He lived much of his life in the Merced area. He also lived for a time in the Merced River canyon in El Portal, where he learned his love of nature. Aaron loved to hunt and fish and all things outdoors. He also had a great love of making things with his hands and was very artistic.

Aaron spent his career in the heavy concrete construction industry building bridges, roadways, water systems and stadiums, including Stadium 76 at Merced College. He retired in late 2008 and was a proud long-time member of the Laborers Union.

A celebration of Aaron’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mariposa Masonic Temple, 5154 Jones Street in Mariposa.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to to the American Cancer Society in Aaron’s name.
