Gary Nichols

Gary Nichols, 74, of Mariposa passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2014 in the presence of his loving family.

Gary was born on Nov. 11, 1940 to Alfred and Audrey Nichols in Long Beach, Calif. His love for the mountains brought him and his wife to Mariposa in May of 2011, shortly after they retired, where they settled quietly into mountain living.

Before retiring, Gary owned and operated service stations and a towing business in Borrego Springs and Julian, both in Southern California.

Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed almost anything car-related. One of his greatest joys was racing a 1929 Roadster at El Mirage Dry Lake Bed and Bonneville Salt Flats where he broke a 200-mph speed record. He was also a big NASCAR fan and enjoyed supporting his favorite drivers.

Gary is survived by his wife, Gina, daughter Natalie (Vinnie) Cilurzo from Santa Rosa, and stepdaughters Gina Davalos and Ann Hassinger of San Diego. He is also survived by his younger brother Curt (Sandes) Nichols of Temecula, Calif., and nieces Inga and Alexis.

Gary was a kind and gentle man and will be missed.

A celebration of his life will take place at Ponderosa Basin Chapel at 5611 Creel Road on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the SPCA of Mariposa County at P.O. Box 671, Mariposa CA 95338 or www.mariposaspca.org.
