Possible pipe bomb closes Highway 49 South

Monday, Dec. 1, 12 p.m. - The California Highway Patrol has closed Highway 49 South at Silva Road due to the discovery of a possible pipe bomb found in that area.

Local CHP Commander Rebecca Hagen has advised that the highway will be closed until the arrival of the Merced Bomb Squad to dispose of the device.

She described the device as a piece of galvanized pipe capped at both ends.

Residents traveling in that direction should seek an alternate route around the scene.
