Hotel Jeffery burns early Wednesday

(Mariposa County Sheriff's Office | CONTRIBUTED)(Mariposa County Sheriff's Office | CONTRIBUTED)Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014 - 8:30 a.m. - Coulterville's historic Hotel Jeffery, which once hosted President Theodore Roosevelt, was severely damaged in a pre-dawn fire this morning.

A hotel guest was the first to report the blaze around 1 a.m. At least 75 firefighters from CAL FIRE and Mariposa County responded to the incident.

The Hotel Jeffery was built in 1851 to aid stagecoach passengers on the way to Yosemite. The hotel's saloon may have been the oldest operating saloon in the state.

The original hotel burned three times prior to 1889.

The GAZETTE will run a full report on the fire in its Nov. 20 issue. Anyone who witnessed the fire, photographed it or who would like to comment can email to editor@mariposagazette.com
