George R. Sutherland, Jr.

George R. Sutherland, Jr. unexpectantly passed away on Sept. 20, 2014.

George was born on Dec. 3, 1933, to George and Martha Sutherland, in Santa Rosa, Calif. He spent his childhood in Sonoma County as his father was a caretaker for many of the ranches in that area.

George, at the age of 19, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. When his service was over, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for serving in the Korean War and the United States Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal for faithful and honorable service.

George met and married his first wife, Sylvia in Santa Rosa, Calif. and they had three sons, George III, Jim and Michael. They had a long and good life together. Then Sylvia sadly passed away.

George always said that he was so blessed by the Lord because not only was he given a wonderful life with his first wife, but then he met Debbie and was blessed again. He and Debbie were both working at a Christian camp up north. God joined them first as friends and then as husband and wife. They married, lived and had two sons in Santa Rosa.

In October of 2005, George, Debbie, Peter and Joey moved to Mariposa because George retired from Santa Rosa Junior College, where he was the warehouse manager, and because of Debbie’s roots were in Mariposa. And even though George had many health issues, he thoroughly enjoyed his nine years here.

George is survived by his wife, Debbie, his sons, George (Jane) III, Jim, Michael, Peter and Joey; and six grandchildren, his younger brother O.J. (Sher) and many nieces and nephews.

George passionately loved and served his Lord, his family and friends. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.

There will be a celebration of life at New Life Christian Fellowship, 5089 Cole Road in Bootjack, on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.
