Halloween storm may close Tioga Pass

A surprise downpour filled Mariposa gutters in early September. (Erik Skindrud | The GAZETTE)A surprise downpour filled Mariposa gutters in early September. (Erik Skindrud | The GAZETTE)Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 - 1:45 p.m. - A storm forecast to arrive on Friday, Oct. 31 may disrupt holiday trick-or-treating and may close Tioga Pass over the Sierra, forecasters said today.

As of today, National Weather Service forecasters saw the storm bringing a little over half an inch of rain to Mariposa.

Foothill forecasts tend to be inexact, however. The area's last significant rain event, the last weekend of September, was originally expected to bring drizzle. By the time it ended, an inch or more had fallen across the county.

The approaching storm is also expected to dump between 4 and 8 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. The east side of the Sierra could see up to 14 inches.

"Snow may lead to the winter closure of Sonora and Tioga passes," the National Weather Service said.
