Rut, hunt, are cause for deer caution

(California Department of Fish & Wildlife | CONTRIBUTED)(California Department of Fish & Wildlife | CONTRIBUTED)Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 - 10:10 a.m. - Deer are on the move this week, and deserve heightened vigilance from motorists, CHP Officer Tim Kilcrease said today.

"It pays to be extra alert, and keep speeds down," the officer said.

This week, multiple deer carcasses could be seen along county roads and highways. Mating time, along with the approach of winter and an ongoing hunt, are prompting deer to cover more ground this time of year.

Reducing speed and scanning left and right with your vision are proven ways to reduce the chance of striking deer and other wildlife, Officer Kilcrease advised.
