King Fire smoke smothering Mariposa County

12:55 p.m., Sept. 19, 2014 - Smoke from the huge King Fire in El Dorado County (east of Sacramento) is blowing into Mariposa County, filing the air with the acrid smell of smoke and altering visibility.

According to Dave Conway at the Mariposa County Enviromental Health Department, a change in the wind patterns is driving the smoke south to Mariposa County along the Sierra Nevada Range.

The King Fire, which is approaching 80,000 acres, was only 10 percent contained this morning.

The wind patterns may change with afternoon heating, possibly clearing the air.

There is no active wildland fire in Mariposa County at this time.
