Firefighters report progress on blazes

(Yosemite Conservancy | CONTRIBUTED)(Yosemite Conservancy | CONTRIBUTED)Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014 - 2:30 p.m. - Yosemite's Meadow Fire was five percent contained this afternoon. The Bridge Fire was 85 percent contained and the Montgomery Fire was about 50 percent contained.

Web cam photos showed the Meadow Fire producing significant smoke in the Yosemite Valley area around 8:30 a.m. this morning. By 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, prevailing westerly winds had cleared most smoke out of the Valley, however.

By midday today, the Meadow Fire had grown to at least 4,400 acres in size. The upper Merced River corridor and the trail to Half Dome remains closed to visitors.

In Ponderosa Basin, where the Bridge Fire prompted widespread evacuations on Friday, firefighters were mopping up and monitoring the perimeter for spot fires today. Also today, a CAL FIRE press release said a vehicle had sparked the fire.
