Bridge Fire off Hwy. 49 South prompts evacuations

(Mariposa County Sheriff's Office | CONTRIBUTED)(Mariposa County Sheriff's Office | CONTRIBUTED)Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 -1:45 p.m. - A wildfire near the William Sell Bridge over the Chowchilla River has closed Highway 49 South and is prompting an evacuation advisory for as many as 2,500 Ponderosa Basin residents, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office said this afternoon.

As of 2:12 p.m., the Bridge Fire had consumed close to 50 acres, a CAL FIRE update said.

"Please avoid the area as there is heavy emergency traffic," a message distributed via the Sheriff's Office's Nixle alert system said at 1:29 p.m. today.

A Red Cross Shelter has been established at New Life Christian Fellowship church on Cole Road, near the intersection of Highway 49 South and Darrah Road. 

A recorded information line is providing fire updates at 966-1133.
