Wildfire smoke will likely affect area through weekend

Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 - 9 a.m. - Smoke from area wildfires, including the El Portal Fire, and the French Fire in Sierra National Forest, will likely impact the area through the weekend, forecasters say.

Daily air-quality updates are now being posted on the county Web site. This morning's report shows that air reached levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups in Ponderosa Basin and Oakhurst over the past 24 hours. Particulate levels in Midpines, Mariposa and El Portal were ranked moderate and Coulterville air was ranked good for the period.

On the fire front, the El Portal Fire has consumed 4,198 acres and is 58 percent contained, the fire information team reports. The French Fire, located near Mammoth Pool Reservoir in Sierra National Forest, has hit the 8,200-acre mark and was considered 15 percent contained this morning.
