Sheriff's office warns about phone scams

Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014 - 8:45 a.m. - Scammers have posed as Mariposa County Sheriff's Office personnel and as other official callers while asking residents for financial data, the county sheriff's office said this week.

In some cases, scammers have used scrambling devices to change the phone number shown on the caller ID, in some cases showing the sheriff's office phone number, 966-3615. Scammers have identified themselves as sheriff's office personnel and used names of current staff members or said they are with other governmental agencies, stating they are attempting to collect a debt.

"We would like to remind everyone not to give personal information out over the phone," sheriff's office spokesperson Kristie Mitchell said. "The sheriff's office will never contact you via the phone to collect a debt."

Also this week, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported similar activity in the adjacent county.
