Firefighters make gains, smoke dissipates

Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 - 2:15 p.m. - Firefighters have made progress against Yosemite's El Portal Fire, and against Sierra National Forest's French Fire, relieving oppressive smoke over the county.

At last report, the El Portal Fire was 89 percent contained after burning 4,689 acres.

The French Fire, burning near Mammoth Pool Reservoir in Madera County, was 20 percent contained after torching 12,827 acres.

According to the Mariposa County Air Pollution Control District, local air quality has been good over the past 24 hours in Mariposa, Coulterville and Midpines. Air quality was moderate, but improving, In El Portal and Ponderosa Basin.

The arrival of low pressure over the area on Sunday also weakened a high-pressure dome that held smoke down over the county.
