Fire raging near El Portal

Sunday, July 27, 2014 - Around 3:15 Saturday afternoon, a wildland fire erupted near the community of El Portal.

(Harry Vanderburg | Contributed) 9:45 p.m. Saturday the fire had ripped through 2,100 acres of tinder-dry vegetation.

Evacuations were in effect for Foresta and Old El Portal and the Crane Flat Campgound had been evacuated. 

Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies updated the evacuation information early this morning. As of around 7:20 Sunday morning, 76 homes in Old El Portal had been evacuated and 11 residents had refused to leave or weren't at home to be advised of the evacuation. Highway 140 remains open at this time.
