Fire containment is upped to 19 percent

Tuesday, July 29, 2014 - 10:15 a.m. - Firefighters have made progress against the El Portal Fire, with 19-percent containment achieved by 9 a.m. this morning.

The total acreage consumed by the blaze stood at 3,060 acres this morning, a fire information spokesman said.

As of 9 a.m. this morning, residents were being allowed to return to their homes in old El Portal. Evacuations remained in effect for about 45 structures in Foresta, however.

Officials had no estimated opening time for the Park's Big Oak Flat Road, the spokesman said.

Federal incident command rules prevent the spokesman from giving his name to media outlets, the Yosemite fire information employee said.
