Clifford was one of the first presidents of the John C. Fremont Foundation and was dedicated to supporting the organization and the Ewing Wing. He was chairman of the committee that built the first helicopter landing pad at the hospital.

He was a 52-year member of the Mariposa Masonic Lodge serving in all the offices and committees. He served as inspector for the 411th district for 10 years and received the Hiram Award in 1982 for outstanding service to the organization. He was chairman of the committee that built the Masonic Chapel at the Mariposa Cemetery. In 1995, he became the Masonic funeral chairman and conducted funeral services up until he moved to the Masonic retirement home in Union City. He was also a member of the Fresno Scottish Rite and received the Knights Commander Court of Honor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy stationed in the Philippines. He was a member of the local VFW and was known for his beerock dinners he served yearly at their meetings and for many years of volunteering at the beer booths at the Mariposa County Fair.
