Forest tribute will recall lost firefighters

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 - 4 p.m. - Stanislaus National Forest will honor firefighters who perished in 1994 and 2013 blazes at a Wednesday, July 2 ceremony and memorial concert.

The observance starts at 8 p.m. in the forest's Pinecrest Amphitheater, located off Highway 108 in Tuolumne County.

The event features firefighter Patrick Karnahan and the Black Irish band. The tribute commemmorates the loss of 14 firefighters in 1994's South Canyon Fire in Colorado and the loss of 19 firefighters in the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona.

Mariposa has a connection to the latter event. Len DeJoria, the Mariposa County Fire Department's new chief, formerly served with the Prescott (Arizona) Fire Department, which is the home agency of the crew impacted by last June 30's deadly blaze.

Call the forest for more information at 965-3434.
