Fireworks tradition is on hold this July 4

Friday, June 20, 2014 - 1:45 p.m. - The long-running July 4 fireworks show at the county fairgrounds is on hold this year due to limited funds, Helen Kwalwasser of the Mariposa Kiwanis service club reports.

The live show, which cost close to $12,000 to stage in recent years, was put on for almost 22 consecutive years by local Kiwanis.

The GAZETTE encourages readers to weigh in on the issue on its Web site and Facebook page.

I do think local funraising

I do think local funraising is needed to continue this wonderful tradition. As others have said, people may be inclined to use their own fireworks if they don't have a show. Additionally, it's a gathering of community and friends. Fundraising would have to be intense, as the 4th is only two weeks out. I hope it happens!

I think it might be prudent

I think it might be prudent to get the community involved in the funding. It would be better to have a public show than have people celebrating with illegal(in the county) fireworks. Even Safe and Sane fireworks cause fires. We just don't need that!

is there anything the

is there anything the community can do to help with the funds at this point?
