Lillian May Varain Hulbert

May Varain Hulbert passed away at her home on May 27,

2014. She was 67 years old.

Mrs. Hulbert was born in

Merced and lived in the Mariposa area for the first 23 and the last 24 years of her life.

She worked as a teacher’s aide at Woodland School for the past 20 years. She also worked as attendance secretary at Mariposa County High School, secretary at the Apple Valley Fire Protection District, and as a teacher’s aide for various schools where her children attended. She volunteered as secretary for Bootjack Volunteer Fire Company 37. Lillian graduated from Mariposa County High School in 1964 proudly—with an award for perfect attendance for all four years.

She enjoyed creating and putting together school projects for the children at Woodland School, and was very caring towards the children. She loved her job. She loved butterflies, carnations and wind chimes. She was known for her potato salad, baking cakes and other culinary delights.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen and Ruby Varain, her twin brother, Lee Varain, her brother in law, Roland, and her nephew, Richard.

Lillian is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Richard M. Hulbert, her son James, and her daughter-in-law Shonda, her son Timothy, her daughter-in-law Debby, and her granddaughter Christina. She is also survived by her daughter Jeanette, her son-in-law Dale, her grandsons Gage and Ashton, her sister Ruby, her brother-in-law Keith, her sisters Lois and Clara and her honorary grandchildren Jessica and Shelby Woods, along with numerous extended family and friends.

She will be loved and missed by all.

Services will be held Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at the outdoor pavilion at the Mariposa Town Cemetery. A celebration-of-life potluck will follow at Bootjack Fire Company No. 37 at 3883 Bootjack Lane.

Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service in Merced.
