(Greg Knight | The GAZETTE)Wednesday, May 7, 2014 - 8:45 a.m. - The Mariposa Grizzlies baseball team took the Southern Athletic League championship at home on Tuesday, May 6, courtesy of a 7-3 win over Ripon Christian in a game that very nearly could have gotten away from the Griz.

After going down by a run in the top of the first inning, the bats were not exactly hot for Mariposa as Knights pitcher Conner McGovern managed to strike out four of ten Grizzlies at the plate.

The first sign of an offense for Mariposa came in the bottom of the third when senior Sam Tucker came out of the gates to belt a double to left field. A sacrifice bunt by second baseman Jake Williams sent Tucker home for the tying run.

It was in the fourth inning, however, and after a serious tongue-lashing by head coach Bruce Vegely, that the Griz picked up the pace.
