Small grass fire highlights wildfire risk

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 - 11:15 a.m. - A small grass fire at Highway 49 North and French Camp Road today was quickly extinguished by firefighters, but highlights the danger posed by drying vegetation.

While no ignition source was immediately found, it could have been sparked by a tossed cigarette butt, Mariposa County Fire Department Chief Len DeJoria said.

"Grass may look green, but things are still dry," DeJoria said. "There's duff underneath that will burn easily if ignited. People should use caution, because discarded smoking materials can ignite fires at the sides of roads."
