Joseph Edward Higuera

Joseph Edward Higuera, one of 11 children, was born to Charles and Pauline Higuera on March 18, 1929 in Holtville Calif. Joe’s family later moved to San Jose, where he spent his younger years. Joe graduated from San Jose High School, then served from 1948 to 1952 in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

Joe was a graduate of both San Jose State University (BS) and the University of Hawaii (MPH). After receiving his Masters in Public Health, Joe spent several years during the Vietnam War working in the field of public health for the U.S. State Department in Saigon.

After returning from Saigon, Joe continued his work for the federal government, becoming a public health officer in Yosemite National Park. Joe loved the Park and the surrounding areas. Joe designed and built his dream home in Mariposa, and continued to live there after his retirement from the Park.

In 2009, advancing years and a number of physical ailments forced Joe to sell his home and move to Mariposa Pines Villa, an assisted-living facility in Mariposa, where he received excellent care from Staci, Pat and their staff.

On Feb. 18, Joe finally lost his battle with all his illnesses. He passed away peacefully in hospice care at John C. Fremont Hospital.

Joe’s interests included genealogy, California history, music, photography and gardening. Joe is survived by his brother, Steve, sisters, Anne, Mary and Helen and many loving nieces and nephews.

A private family service was held on Feb. 26 at the national cemetery in Santa Nella.
