Mariposa enjoys 75-degree day

The Mariposa mercury hit 75 degrees on Friday afternoon--topping the same-time temperature in Merced by close to 10 degrees.

Record-high temperatures and dry conditions are raising eyebrows across the state. Firefighters with CAL FIRE are maintaining a careful watch and have issued an order banning open burning until further notice.

In Mariposa on Friday, Darrielle Ruyle was basking in the warmth while visiting from San Diego with her children Braden, 10, and Reagan, 2.

"It's hot today," Ruyle said around 2 p.m. "But it's not as bad as when we left (San Diego) yesterday--it was 90 degrees."

According to the National Weather Service the high temperature in Fresno on Thursday, Jan. 16 hit 71 degrees--breaking a record high for the day set in 1909.

According to local records, Thursday's high temperature in Mariposa was 74 degrees.

Forecasters see a chance of moisture reaching the region on Thursday, Jan. 23. Even if rain doesn't materialize, cooler weather is likely around the date, the National Weather Service says.
