Dogs in apparent poisoning improve

Three dogs at a Bear Valley home were found near death in an apparent poisoning on Tuesday afternoon. Dog owner Bryant Gomes said a group of jobless neighbors with drug problems are suspected in the case.

Airdale Sam, pitbull-collie Bentley and Chihuahua-dachshund Paco were foaming at the mouth and rolling in convulsions when Gomes returned to his Bear Valley Road home following an errand on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Upon his return, Paco "fell down and started shivering and shaking," Gomes reported. Bentley's "eyes were rolled back in his head," the retired social worker recalled.

On Halloween, Gomes reported a break-in and theft to the county sheriff's office. He has since calculated the loss at close to $17,000. He speculated that the thieves poisoned the dogs because their barking interfered with their thievery.

Gomes has no photographic proof, but suspects a group of jobless neighbors who are known methamphetamine users, he said this week.

"We know who did this," he said. "It's just a matter of evidence so (sheriff's deputies) can make the arrests."

As of 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a veterinarian had given the animals "a 50-50-percent chance" of survival, Gomes said.

Sheriff's office investigators had taken a report and an investigation was continuing, Gomes added.
