Community observes Veterans Day

Mariposa Elementary School hosted its 19th-annual Veterans Day event on Thursday, bringing together teachers, schoolchildren, veterans, law enforcement and local officials.

The event is held the Thursday before each November's school holiday to allow students to learn and participate.

"On Monday, when you're home from school, you will remember why you have the day off," said Mika Petrucci, spokesperson for California Sen. Tom Berryhill and Assemblymember Frank Bigelow.

A contingent from the local Veterans of Foreign Wars group fired a three-shot volley from World War II-era M-1 rifles towards the end of the ceremony. The loud reports drew gasps from students.

Towards the event's conclusion, Arnold Mininger, the local VFW Post Commander, invited area veterans and their families to a Veterans Day dinner starting at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at the local VFW hall.
