Sept. 11 is observed in Mariposa

Local firefighters, law enforcement and residents gathered on Wednesday to mark the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The morning ceremony took place at the community's Art Park memorial, which is built around I-beams recovered from the aftermath of New York's World Trade Center collapse.

Sheriff Doug Binnewies and county supervisor Lee Stetson praised retiring fire chief Jim Wilson for his efforts in securing the historic artifacts and leading the memorial effort.

In a solemn ceremony, an honor guard marched to flags on either side of the memorial and lowered them to half staff.
