Cool respite to precede another hot spell

The National Weather Service forecast a Mariposa high temperature of 90 degrees on Wednesday, before the mercury again climbs to 100 degrees this weekend. Tuesday's cool-down is due to a low-pressure system off the Sonoma County coast.

The cooler weather on Tuesday broke Fresno's string of 19 days hitting at least 100 degrees. The string of days was the fourth-longest hot trend in the city's history, forecasters said.

That low is expected to lift northward by the end of the week, however. A "push of monsoonal air" may bring clouds and a chance of mountain thunderstorms back to the Sierra by Saturday.

Temperatures are poised to hit 100 degrees again in Mariposa by Saturday, the National Weather Service says.Temperatures are poised to hit 100 degrees again in Mariposa by Saturday, the National Weather Service says.
