Cornelia ‘Cori’ Smith

Cornelia "Cori" Smith, 82, died Monday April 1, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. A graduate of Stanford University, Cori was a sketch and watercolor artist, and an elementary school teacher in Southern California.

Upon retirement, she and her husband Jim moved to Mariposa. She was instrumental in the founding of the Mariposa French Club. She was involved with many activities protecting and improving the natural environment in the Yosemite area. After Jim's death in 1982, Cori moved to Hyde Park, N.Y., where she resided for over 20 years. She then moved to Arbor Ridge in Rhinebeck, N.Y. where she helped facilitate art and writing courses for the residents. Cori enjoyed nature and was an active member of the Sierra Club and Nature Conservancy. She was also a member of the Unitarian Fellowship in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where she taught senior seminars.

Cori, born to Dr. Thomas and Helen Farnsworth on May 29, 1930 in Birmingham, Ala., is survived by her sister, Helen Swanson of Laguna Woods; three nieces, Nancy McGuire, Diane Adams, and Megan Farnsworth Rabil; two nephews, Bob Swanson and Thomas Farnsworth; 11 grand nieces and nephews and six great grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Farnsworth, Jr.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter, PO Box 886, Syosset, N.Y. 11791-0886: or to the Brookmeade Gardens fund, 46 Brookemeade Dr. Rhinebeck, N.Y. 12572. Memorial services were held on April 27 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and at Arbor Ridge, Rhinebeck, N.Y. on April 28.

She will be missed by her many Mariposa friends.
