Fire conditions updated

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

The Carstens Fire is now being handled by the federal government, according to CAL FIRE Deputy Chief Kevin Smith. It continues to burn at this time.

The fire has consumed about 650 acres as of 8 a.m. Hundreds of firefighters have converged on Mariposa County to battle the blaze.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by other law enforcement agencies from the region.  These officers are from several California counties such as Kings, Tulare, Fresno, Madera, Merced and cities within.

"These officers are assisting in providing securing and services to the affected fire area, especially in the immediate evacuation areas," Binnewies said. "If you see unfamiliar law enforcement personnel and vehicles rest assured that they are present to assist and serve those affected by the fire."

Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputies are assigned with these officers and are in constant communication if needed.

Jerseydale and Triangle Road remain under evacuation order. The Lushmeadows subdivison is under a pre-evacuation order at this time.

The Gazette will continue to update the situation as information is provided. So far, more than 300 homes have been evacuated. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Mariposa Elementary School.
