Carstens Fire is 60 percent contained

Backburn operations were contributing to smoky conditions in Midpines, Lushmeadows and Mariposa on Thursday morning. Evacuations have been cancelled for most residences excluding those along Buckingham Mountain Road and Carter Road.

As of Thursday morning, traffic restrictions remained in place for Triangle and Darrrah roads and the Jerseydale-Mariposa Pines areas. Those zones were open only to residents who present ID to officers.

"On the southwest side of the fire, the fire continues to back dowslope toward the constructed dozer lines burning pockets of green fuel between the fire line and the fire," the fire information office said. "This is favorable for containment goals."

With conditions tinder-dry and the calendar not yet in the summer season, officials urged the public to remain extremely cautious about sparks and fire.

Thanks, Gazette -- you made

Thanks, Gazette -- you made it possible for friends & family of Triangle Road folks all over the country to keep up with what was happening.

I am so grateful to all of

I am so grateful to all of the emergency personnel, the people of Mariposa, the mountain community, those in Merced and Atwater that contributed to help displaced families (human and animal alike). Thank goodness that no homes were lost and only one person was injured due to this fire and the erratic winds! I was not personally evacuated, but several friends left behind material items to protect their families. I do have a question though... Do we know when Carter Rd and Buckingham Mountain Rd will be reopened? The Carter Ranch Music Festival starts tomorrow at 1 pm. I just hope that we continue to be blessed and the festival can proceed as scheduled!

A big THANK YOU goes to the MARIPOSA GAZETTE, notably, Jill Ballinger-Editor, and Erik Skindrud-Reporter, who have kept us informed with all their breaking news regarding this fire! Obviously, they are both dedicated to keeping our community informed of all the latest events which helps us make the right decisions to keep us safe! Again, THANKS, to them both! Shortie

I absolutely agree with you.

I absolutely agree with you. Thank you Mariposa Gazette. We have a home in the area that we are in the process of moving to, so being far away, you were the best source of information in getting updates and knowing what was going on. I cannot express enough appreciation for those firefighters who put their lives at risk to protect not only us people but our homes and animals as well. I am so excited to become a part of such an awesome community!

My hat goes off to all those

My hat goes off to all those brave men and women taking care of us. Although my home was miles away from the actual fire, I salute these heroes for what they have accomplished!
