MCHS student arrested for on-campus sexual assault

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

Mariposa County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a 16-year-old male for two alleged sexual assaults. Both of the incidents occurred on the Mariposa County High School campus.

According to Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies, a 17-year-old female was sexually assaulted following a concert on May 21. The victim verbally and forcibly resisted the attack. She reported the incident on May 28.

The suspect was arrested the same day. His bail was set at $100,000.

The next day, deputies spoke with another female student who also reported being assaulted by the suspect. She said she was forcibly held against the gym wall. She fought back. She was able to break away to an area where other students were present.

The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office is working with the school district and the district attorney's office to identify all the facts surrounding this incident. "All agencies are cooperatively working with much focus on providing a safe and secure high school campus," Sheriff Doug Binnewies said.

The suspect is being detained by the Mariposa County Probation Department.

"This is a very serious and troubling assault investigation," Binnewies said. "Obviously, I don't want to pre-convict this young man, but if these allegations against him are proven true, he absolutely needs to face the full consequences."

The Gazette will continue to follow this developing story and bring updates as information becomes available.

I really respect Sheriff

I really respect Sheriff Binnewies, for stating he does not want to "pre-convict" this boy! Rumors are just that, rumors or exaggerated facts. I've heard this boy is the nicest, sweetest, and respectful. Hopefully the truth comes out, because this boys life could be ruined, forever, on false accusations!!

I agree with the previous

I agree with the previous comment that it's not nice to call people names. However, a person who is complaining about Mariposans being called white trash might want to spell and grammar check their comment. It does not help brighten our image when individuals from our community cannot effectively form a paragraph.

I woulkd like to say a couple

I woulkd like to say a couple things. I know we have the freedom of speech and religion, but i take full offense to the things said about this town on a facebook post. Calling us "bigots" and "white trash". They call us racist but yet there trowing out rasict terms left and right. I wish something could be done about this, completly un called for.
