James ‘Jimmy’ Phillips

James (Jimmy) Lester Phillips left this Earth to be with our Lord on Feb. 17, surrounded by family and friends.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Lester “Hoot” Phillips; his sister, Marilyn; and brother-in-law, Forrest Ward.

He is survived by Charity Faith Phillips, his wife of 40 years and high school sweetheart; his mother, Roberta Phillips; sisters, Patricia (Harry) Kelly of Pennsylvania and Judy Ward; and brother, Tom (Lily) Phillips of Mariposa.

Jim and Charity’s family consists of daughters, Jaycee (Preston) Smith of Mariposa, Kourtini (Jeremy) McLaughlin and Michelle (Greg) Rounsivill all of Ahwahnee; and sons, Michael (Amber) Phillips of Coarsegold and James (Samantha) Phillips of Ahwahnee; nephew Steven (Tina) Ward of Mariposa; and inlaws, Bob and Dorothy Standlee of Ahwahnee.

He was an active and loving “Grampy” to 14 grandchildren: Britany, Victoria, Derek, Justin, Dylan, Ethan, Delainey, Carter, Madison, Rylie, Paige, Jordyn, Miah and Brayden. His nieces and nephews include Chelsee Albright, Cameren, Ryen and Kylie Ward and dozens of others.

Jim was born in Alameda, on Sept. 24, 1953. He spent most of his childhood in Mariposa County and graduated from Mariposa High School in 1971. He worked as a plumber throughout Mariposa, Merced and Madera counties for over 35 years. He is well known for his hard work and dedication to his field.

Jim loved to work with his hands, whether it was creating a custom bathroom or rebuilding an old lawn mower. He enjoyed doing service work as a plumber so he had the opportunity to help and meet new people. Jim was well known for his gift of gab, laughter, and home spun stories. Jim spent his spare time watching sports, rebuilding old cars, tinkering in his shop, landscaping for Charity and helping many friends and families.

Jim will be greatly missed, not only by family and friends but by anyone who ever had the good fortune to meet him.

A celebration of life will be held on March 9 at Mariposa County Fairgrounds, Building B at 1 p.m. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made toward a scholarship being set up in Jimmy’s name. The account is at Yosemite Bank, #307015768.
