Plan would cut Mariposa Grove tram tours

By Erik Skindrud / GAZETTE EDITOR

A Yosemite National Park plan released on Tuesday would eliminate tram tours, parking lots, some roads and a gift shop at the Park's Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Citizens can comment on the grove's proposed makeover through May 7. The plan can be accessed and comments added at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=347&projectID=38400&documentID=51911

If approved as proposed, the project will bring other big changes to the Mariposa Grove area. Perhaps the biggest will be a parking and transportation “hub” just east of the Park’s south entrance. Its 260 new parking spaces will replace the existing parking lot at the Mariposa Grove itself.

Visitors will ride shuttle busses or hike a new, 2-mile trail to reach the grove from the staging area.

Visitors with disabilities (who have handicapped placards for their vehicles) will be allowed to drive to the grove and tour a limited section of paved roadway there.

Read the Feb. 28 MARIPOSA GAZETTE to learn more about the proposed grove makeover.
