Warm today, cooler and rainy next week

Erik Skindrud / GAZETTE EDITOR

Temperatures hit 78 degrees in El Portal on Friday, and Saturday should be warm as well. Expect cooler weather on Sunday, however, with rain and a much colder pattern coming next week.

The high in Mariposa on Friday was just 67 degrees, according to the remote automated weather station off Highway 49 North. The temperature displayed Friday on the Mariposa Fairgrounds sign (below) was unofficial--from a non-calibrated instrument.

Still, it was warm in town on Friday.

On Friday (Feb. 15), the National Weather Service saw a low-pressure system in the Central Pacific heading towards California with rain and a "cold pool" of air. Snow levels may go low by Tuesday, but forecasters aren't yet sure if snowfall will impact the Mariposa area.

"A brief respite" is then forecast for Wednesday before another system rolls over the area later next week.
