Vandals take out tennis court lights

Erik Skindrud / GAZETTE EDITOR

A day after a lighting system debuted at the county park tennis courts, vandals destroyed eight lamps worth $375.

The unsporting act, apparently carried out with rocks, took place prior to the morning of Feb. 7. Anyone with information on the destruction can phone the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office anonymous tip line at 966-3476.

After working for most of a year to get the lights up and running, the local tennis community was hit hard by the vandalism.

"Try to do something nice for the community, and somebody wrecks it," organizer Irwin Iida of Mariposa Tennis Friends said. "Very, very sad."

"They were up and running for one whole day, and then they were vandalized," said April Hawley of the county's parks and recreation office.

The county will spend about $375 to replace eight broken lamps. The control mechanism will be locked, and visitors will need to borrow a key to use the lights, Hawley said.
