Donald George Brown, Jr.

Donald George Brown was born Dec. 24, 1925, and left this world on Dec. 28.

He was born in Southern California. In 1943, at 18 years of age, he jumped into World War II, joining the only branch of service that took men with flat feet, the US Coast Guard. He served a little more than three years and was honorably discharged, first class, in 1946.

He met and fell in love with his wife, Avis D. Bowls, of South Carolina. His daughter says he kept her mother “barefoot and pregnant,” and the couple had five children: Christopher Bruce, Jeri Loretta, Teri Ruth, Sheri Louis and Michael Randolph.

Don worked in the family business, Brownies Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning. The Browns divorced in 1967, and the family business sold. Don worked for Barber Welding for five years.

He retired to Midpines and moved to Mariposa in 1995. Prior to retiring, he loved collecting guns. He also loaded his own shells. He grew interested in gold panning, then gold dredging.

Don met Helen on the Merced River, and they became close friends. Helen shared her claim, and they worked together panning for gold, laughing and teasing each other.

He had many friends. He lived his dream, and was sweet to the ladies in his life. Don will be remembered for being a kid at heart.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Donald George Brown, Sr. and Ruth Pricilla Crouch; children, Christopher Bruce and Teri Ruth.

He is survived by his children, Jeri Loretta and Michael and Rashel Brody Brown; his best and beloved friend, Lee Sanders.
