Fatal crash in Merced River Canyon

Monday, Dec. 31,2012 - 8:30 a.m. - The California Highway Patrol is reporting a fatal auto accident in the Merced River Canyon that took the life of a 25-year old on Sunday morning.

According to the CHP, the male victim's vehicle left the highway and plunged down a 30-foot embankment, striking an oak tree righton the edge of the Merced River. Due to the fact that fluids from the vehicle were visible within the river, the event was declasred a azardous materials incident. The highway was closed for approximately two hours.

The victim's identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Reportedly his was a resident of Midpines.
