Joan Van Gorkom

Joan Van Gorkom went home to her Lord the morning of Dec.

14 from her Mariposa home.

Joan was born in Richmond,

Ind. on Sept. 23, 1935.

The family moved to San Jose, where she met and married her husband Bob in 1956. She leaves behind her husband Bob, three sons (Jim, John, and Dan) and their wives, along with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Joan has a brother, William Cushard of Henderson, Nev., and was preceded into glory by her sister Carol Olsen.

Joan was very involved in Christian music for many years before suffering a stroke in 1998. She soloed frequently in her church in San Jose, along with singing with a Christian touring group and doing other concert work with many major Christian artists. Joan’s joy in the Lord, beside her pride in her family, was the ability to apply basic Biblical principles in her continual counseling.

Joan had struggled with a heart condition most of her life and had several cardiac procedures in the last months. She was blessed with a wonderful Christian cardiologist and before one procedure in October asked him to pray that she would celebrate her 56th anniversary. Then in mid-November, again she asked for prayer for another Thanksgiving with the entire family. God granted those wishes before calling her home.

There will be a memorial service rejoicing in her glorification at Grace Community Church, 3367 Woodland Dr., Mariposa at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22. All are invited to celebrate her life in Christ.
