Ron Silva

Ron Silva, 58, died Sunday morning, Dec. 2, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno after a threemonth battle with leukemia. He lived in Mariposa County since 1983.

A long-time Yosemite garage mechanic and foreman, Ron was an avid fisherman who told friends and family that he “worked to live, and lived to go fly fishing.” His passion for fishing began as a young boy living in the Oakdale area.

As an adult, he treasured fly-fishing trips around Northern California with his fishing buddies. He took special pride in tying his own flies. He also enjoyed annual summer backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada with several close friends. He had considerable knowledge of the area’s flora and fauna.

Ron worked for the concession company at the Yosemite Garage for nearly 40 years. In 2010, the Delaware North Company named him Employee of the Year for Yosemite.

He was born Dec. 28, 1953, in Oakdale and graduated from Oakdale High School.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Barbara, a teacher at Woodland School; and his cherished daughter, Chelsea, a 2007 Mariposa County High School graduate who lives in Rohnert Park. He is also survived by three sisters, Donna Watkins of Waterford, Peggy Lawrence of Modesto, and Sandy Katzenmeyer of Golden Valley, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Joan Silva; and his brother, Dennis Silva.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. It will take place at New Life Christian Fellowship on Cole Road in Mariposa.
