Gary Howell

On Nov. 9, Gary Don Howell passed away at his home in Mariposa after an extended illness. His wife, Gloria, and daughter, Desiree, and her family and his beloved dog, Buddy were at his side.

Gary, the youngest of three brothers, was born in Lompoc on July 25, 1950, to Narvel and

Lois Howell. He graduated from Lompoc High School and went to Allan Hancock College and then went on to trade school to become skilled in welding. He married Brenda Foley, and together they had two children, Cory Howell and Timothy Howell.

While still living in Lompoc, Gary was called to serve in the Army. He was wounded in Vietnam, and was awarded a Purple Heart as well as the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Expert (Rifle) and 2nd Class Gunner (M-60 MG).

After the army, Gary worked in Civil Service at CBC Base at Pt. Hueneme as a heavy equipment painter. He married the love of his life, Gloria Gagne, in 1982, and they lived in Oxnard, with their three children Cory, Timmy, and Desiree. In Oxnard, Gary’s hobby was raising and breeding registered Labrador puppies, reading and watching westerns. He also enjoyed several vacations with Gloria camping in Mariposa and mining the rivers for gold.

Upon retirement from civil service, Gary and Gloria purchased a small ranch in Mariposa. When Gary moved to his ranch, he was able to realize his dream of living in the country and having horses and dogs. At the ranch, Gary enjoyed riding his horse, some vegetable gardening, working on maintaining his ranch, exploring his property on his tractor and fourwheeler. He also pursued his interest of collecting vintage cigarette lighters and lanterns.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Gloria Howell; daughter, Desiree Howell (Aaron); grandchildren Eddie Vega Jr., Brandon Hill, Timothy Howell Jr., Brianna Hill, Aaron Allen Jr. and Cayden Allen; brothers, Jimmie P. Howell (Kathy) and Narvel L. Howell (Linda); nephews, Erik Howell (Don), and Shawn Howell (Shelly); niece, Traci McPherson (Bill); and many grandnephews, grandnieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gary’s parents, Narvel Howell and Lois Howell; his children, Cory Howell and Timothy Howell; and several cherished aunts, uncles and cousins preceded Gary in death.

At Gary’s request, he is to be cremated and his ashes to be scattered at an intimate gathering. To celebrate Gary’s life and legacy, the family will be having a private memorial.

In lieu of flowers please donate to The Wounded Warriors Project or The Children's Hospital in Gary's name--the two charities Gary cared about.
