Flood watch issued for county

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

Heavy rain is on the way, and the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Mariposa County.

The watch is in effect from Saturday evening, Dec. 1 through Sunday evening, Dec. 2. The third in the current series of storms will reach the area during that time.

Locally heavy rains will be possible. Road flooding and rises in rivers, creeks and streams may occur, according to the watch.

Flooding will be possible in Yosemite Valley, where the Merced River at the Pohono Bridge may briefly rise above flood stage by Sunday afternoon.

Rock and mud slides are also a possibility.

The NWS issues a flood watch when there is the potential for flooding based on forecasts. Residents should be alert for a possible flood warning over the weekend.
