Mysterious rumble shakes county

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

What appears to be an extremely loud and incredibly close clap of thunder shook Mariposa County around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The rumble was strong enough to make some wonder if it was an earthquake. There is no information on the US Geological Survey Web page that indicates there were any earthquakes in the area.

This wasn't an ordinary thunder clap. Many people thought it was an explosion. Gazette readers reported hearing the boom all over the county.

The sound could be heard--and felt--in Cathey's Valley, at the fairgrounds, in Midpines and near Lushmeadows. The National Weather Service radar indicates strong rain in the area and lightning strikes have been observed.

It could be something called

It could be something called "ducting" or "trapping", in which the sound waves of thunder become trapped in a "duct" of cool air near the ground. Normally the sound is released up and away.

I heard it. It was loud but no shaking. I have been in Earthquakes before and that was not one. Whatever the cause I do know it was a noise I haven't heard before. I was upstairs and thought my children found there Halloween candy and were bouncing off the walls kind of sound. Weird how so many others have heard it too.

I was at the computer, when I heard it.It sounded like thunder.I asked my wife Anne,"is that thunder".The only time I have ever heard any thing like it,is when I lived in Nevada and was working around Lake Tahoe. There was a Paiute Chief from Lovelock,Nevada, named "Rolling Thunder".I have heard lots of sonic booms, that was NOT one.

4 miles down Usona I was outside burning brush and running a chain saw when the "rumbling" occurred. A friend was working with me, we both shut down our saws and looked at each other and said "what was that"? It was such a loud rumble it was easy to hear over our chainsaws. It was followed by a long lower sounding rumble, 99% sure it was not thunder. From start to finish it must have lasted 30-40 seconds, maybe longer.

I was sitting down on the computer and had our cat behind me laying down. When we heard the loud boom, it startled her and I. I shut down my computer to go look outside while our cat ran down the hall in fear. I didn't see anything, just saw it was raining and windy. It was really weird. Had to call my mom and husband to be careful when driving on the roads.

Was talking on the phone with my sister in law who's near Woodland... about 10 sec later I heard and felt it here on Westfall. We thought it must be a meteor, space junk, or a jet from Lemoore or Travis. Too bad it was rainy, we may have been able to see something streaming across the sky!

People are describing a sonic

People are describing a sonic boom. We haven't heard one in a long time. It doesn't have to be an airplane or missile --- more fun to think it was a meteor.
