Helen Bullis

Helen Lydia Bullis passed on from this life, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, Nov. 2, at the age of 83.

Helen was born in Fresno on Feb. 2, 1929, to Pete and Pauline Ginther, one of 11 children. She grew up in Fresno, meeting her husband Angus while working at the Lucky Drive Inn. After traveling to Mariposa almost every weekend for camping trips, the family made Mariposa its home in 1968, a few miles from where Angus grew up.

Over the years she was active in Native Daughters of the Golden West, Rebekahs, American Legion, TOPS, PTA, 4-H, Student Loan Committee, German Club, and was an honorary member along with her husband Angus in FFA for their many years of dedicated service. She helped Angus in the planting and harvesting of the wine grape vineyard at their property in Bear Valley

Helen was well known for her good cooking, and many people remember her for the cakes, pies, and delicious dishes prepared for family, friends and many organizations, church functions and pot lucks over the years. She always fed anyone who came along, even the birds and animals that strayed into her yard. She especially enjoyed entering her recipes in the Mariposa County Fair where she won many ribbons.

After her children were raised, she worked at The Miners Inn Restaurant and Best Western Inn doing what she did best, cooking. Helen and Angus enjoyed travels in their later years to Naval service reunions and cruises to Alaska. She also enjoyed travels with her good friend Roberta Phillips to Alaska and many fun trips to casinos and was happiest while spending time with friends and family.

She is survived by her six children, Janet and husband Dennis of Chico, Tim and wife Susie of Mariposa, Terry of Coarsegold, Kevin and wife Teresa of Mariposa, Judy of Bear Valley, Brian and wife Michelle of Mariposa, and step-son Mike and wife Linda of Rio Vista; sisters, Nancy, Bobbie, Alice, Bernadine and Jeraldine; and brothers Leonard and Don. Her grandchildren are Joe of Sylmar, Jessie of Turlock, Jake of Fresno, Emily of Anchor Bay, Josh, Tonya, Garrett, Claire, Brooke and Holly, all of Mariposa; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Angus, in 1999; parents, Pete and Pauline; step-son Richard; and brothers, Bill, Lindsey and Frankie.

She was a member of Mariposa Lutheran Church for many years, enjoying the warm fellowship it offered.

Visitation will be at Mariposa Funeral Home on Friday Nov. 9 from 2 to 8 p.m.

Services will be Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m at Mariposa Lutheran Church, 4469 Highway 49 South, with a reception lunch to follow. Graveside burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows plot at the Mariposa Cemetery. All are welcome.
