Gas drops $.10 in Mariposa; area politicians react to prices

The price of gas dropped $.10 at Mariposa's Grizzly Gas and Stage Stop outlets on Monday. Meanwhile, two area politicians responded to the recent blow-up in fuel prices.

Statewide, the average price has creeped down by more than five cents since Oct. 9, according to the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

It may take a while for prices to fall further than the current $4.60 a gallon for regular.

Two area politicians--one a sitting congressman and another running for congress--addressed high gas prices in recent statements.

Although one is a Democrat and the other a Republican, both said the U.S. needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuel.

"We need to make our country energy independent while creating new energy jobs here in the Central Valley today," Rep. Jeff Denham (R--Turlock) said. "I have and will continue to support legislation that will get us back on the right path and lessen the pain we all feel at the pump.”

Jack Uppal, a Democrat running to become Mariposa's new representative in Congress, said more drilling is not the answer to high prices.

"We need to reduce our dependance on oil," Uppal said. "That's not a quick change, but long-term investments in developing electric cars, and power plants not based on oil would prevent this instability in the market and in our economy."
