Opal ‘Libby’ Greene

Opal I. (Libby) Greene, 79, of Cathey’s Valley, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 8. She was born in Harmony, Maine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel (Giggey) Libby; sister, Eleanor Cromwell; and brother, Everett Libby.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Walter Greene; three daughters, Holli (Scott) Baker of St. Alban’s, Maine; Lorie Moore of Silver Lake, N.H.; and Kelli (Michael) Cooper of Wakefield, N.H.; brother, John Libby and his wife, Helen; of Corinna, Maine; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Opal spent her life being devoted to all she loved and cared about. Her vast relationships and positive influence on family and friends promoted a variety of nicknames from Liz, Mom, Ma, Grammie, Din-din, Popo and GiGi. Beyond her family, Opal’s compassion and devotion to a vast number of friends, from Maine to California and Alaska to Guatemala, was unwavering. The person was always her priority.

Opal had a career as a hairdresser in Massachusetts and California, as well as employment at various electronics companies. Over the years, she had numerous hobbies and interests, but in retirement, her creativitiy in water and oil painting became most admired. Her faith never wavered and she felt her life was always in God’s safe hands.

The Greene family will hold a celebration of life on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at McCay Hall in Cathey’s Valley.
