Nellie Folsom

Nellie Eva Thompson Folsom went to her Lord on Tuesday July 10, at the age of 97 in Coalinga. She was born on Nov. 14, 1914 in Baker, Nev. to C.P. Thompson of Pennsylvania and Alice A. (Taylor) Thompson of Nebraska. She was the fourth of six children, two brothers Vee and Burt and three sisters Verna, Dorothy and Mildred (Babe). Only Babe survives her. She met Robert D. Folsom at a dance to celebrate the end of prohibition and they married in 1933.

Their first child Robert R. (Bobby) was born while they were still in Nevada. The road construction business brought them to California where three daughters were born to them. Kay, Helen and Fax (Marion). They lived in Coalinga for many years and Nellie attended the Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and was a fixture in the choir where on any Sunday you could hear her strong, clear voice ring out. She also held the Good News Club in her home on Jefferson Street where she taught many Coalinga children about Jesus.

She worked in the family business L.D. Folsom, Inc. She was often seen at the college theater, either working behind the scenes sewing costumes or lending her talents to the stage acting in productions. She starred as Mrs. Noah in Noah’s Flood, and appeared in The King and I, The Mikado, and My Fair Lady, all under the direction of Bernice Isham.

When she was 60 Nell spent six months in a remote Australian village volunteering with Wycliffe Bible translators. She felt it was one of the best things she did.

Bob and Nell moved to Morro Bay when Bob retired, where he fished and she was a strong presence in her church and in their bell choir. Later they moved to Mariposa to be closer to their daughter Kay. Nell was a member of the Mariposa Methodist Church and their bell choir. In her later years, she became a prolific quilter and donated many of her crocheted creations to Mountain Crisis Services.

Nellie is survived by her children Bob (Mary) Folsom of Coalinga, Helen Folsom (Joyce Hawkes) of Seattle, WA, and Fax Sinclair of Mariposa. Grand children Karan (Chris) Simons of Coalinga, Megan Mickel of Mariposa, and Jared (Christina) Mickel of Auburn, CA; great grandchildren Robert (Jennifer) Holiman of Phoenix, AZ, Will (Hannah) Holiman of Portland, OR, Matthew (Carly) Holiman of Fresno, Sarah Simons of Coalinga, Maxfield and Porter Mickel of Auburn; son-in-law Gene Mickel of Mariposa, nephews; Ray and Jim (Karen) Oxborrow of Arkansas and Randy (Barbara) Oxborrow of- Coalinga, many grand nieces and nephews. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her daughter Kay Mickel and grandson David Folsom.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, July 24, 10:30 a.m. at Chapel Grace Church, Coalinga.
