El Portal gas station opening delayed

Jill Ballinger/GAZETTE EDITOR

Work continues on the El Portal gas station so that it can reopen.

Installation of new underground tanks at the station is complete, and workers have moved on to repairing and improving the facility. After starting work on the building, contractors found significant damage to the roof, walls, and electrical work. Repairs to these features, as well as installation of a wheelchair accessible restroom, are being completed before the gas station can be safely opened.

National Park Service officials anticipate these repairs will delay opening of the gas station until late July.
