Clinton ‘Dute’ Preston

Clinton Nelson "Dute" Preston, life-long resident and fifth generation Mariposa County rancher went to be with the Lord on June 6, at the age of 94. He was the middle child of Emmet Preston and Effie Hally Probasco Preston's seven children. Dute was born and lived his life all on the ranch that his family homesteaded in the 1850s. He worked during World War II on the Green Mountain Lookout as an aircraft spotter. He also worked seasonally for the California Department of Foresty and for a time at Sierra Motors with Bob Hull.

Mostly, though, he worked on the family ranch where he had cattle and kept the vehicles running.

He was preceeded in death by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Phillips Preston; infant son, James Elwin Preston; his parents, Emmet and Effie Preston, brothers Ray Preston, Lauren "Todd" Preston; and sisters Evelyn Fiske, LaVern Olive and Anita Leonard.

He is survived by sons, Gary (Denise) Preston and Jerry (Rose) Preston; daughters, Nancy (Bob Cromie) and Nadine (John Wight); 12 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren, and nieces and nephews too numerous to count. He is also survived by a fourth sister, Beverly Pinkerton.

A private service is planned for the family according to his wishes.

Jay Chapel, of Madera, is handling the arrangments as they have for several Preston generations.
